14K GOLD FILLED VS. GOLD PLATED
People often ask me what the difference is between gold plated jewelry and 14k gold filled jewelry (which is what I use).
I strive to create quality jewelry that is beautiful to wear and affordable. I am by no means an expert on metal alloys, but I have done a lot of research on the materials I use.
At around $1500 per ounce or just over $50 a gram..... pure gold is a pricey investment and a real luxury. If you love the look and feel of pure gold, 14k gold filled jewelry is an affordable alternative. And yes..... the metal I buy is sold at the daily gold prices and fluctuates when the price of gold goes up and down.
To be called Gold Filled, the gold content must be at least 1/20th the weight of the total piece. This is what stands Gold Filled apart from Gold Plated. There is not a minimum gold quantity required in order to be termed Gold Plated. 14k gold filled wire is a real layer of 14k gold against your skin over a base metal, usually silver.
Having a layer of 14k gold against your skin is especially nice when you have a metal sensitivity. Gold Filled jewelry can be considered hypoallergenic because it contains no zinc, a metal that is known to cause sensitivity or allergic reaction.
Because makeup, lotions, soaps, sunscreens and body oil can cause buildup on your metal jewelry, I recommend a light buffing with a polishing cloth to keep your jewelry looking shiny and new.
If cared for properly, gold filled jewelry lasts beautifully.
